The Year of Me

I don’t know about you, but I am so over the “New Year, New Me” narrative. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m all about evolution and growth just as much as the next person, but the idea that we have to become the best version of ourselves as soon as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Day is problematic for me. Why? Well, I’m glad you asked. Let’s get into it!

Listen, I applaud anyone who decides to improve their lives for the better; however, I don’t like the societal pressures that sometimes make us feel as if we aren’t good enough just as we are, causing us to feel forced to better ourselves. While the new year does come with the promises of newness and fresh starts, it also comes with the expectations of resolutions and sometimes the burden of feeling like a revamp is required. The fact of the matter is, sometimes these ideas can cause more harm than good. I’ll be the first to admit that I have definitely experienced this hurt when I was so hard on myself to be this perfect, amazing Tia for the next 365 days without flaw.

I hate to burst your bubble sis, but  it doesn’t work that way. That’s just not how life is set up and that’s okay!

For this new year, I have decided to free myself of those expectations and give myself permission to dance to the beat of my own drum. I’m calling 2023 the year of me (Y’all know I love a good theme). While I do have some goals I would like to achieve, I’m not pressed about making a gazillion changes to give the impression that I have it all together. Instead, I’m choosing to be more intentional about the things that really matter and what’s truly in my control. I’m going to take things one day at a time and just do the best I can do without feeling like I HAVE to do this or that. Truth is, things fall apart (at least for me) when authenticity is taken away and things start to feel like its a job or something that has to be done. Where’s the fun in that?!

I am being deliberate in the choices I make and you know what? I want the same for you girl. I want 2023 to be the best year yet because YOU decided to make it that way and nobody else. I want you to experience self-awareness, love, joy, change, and growth in your timing. Step into your authority. Just. Do. You.

So here’s to 2023.

To living life on our terms.

To putting ourselves first.

To this truly being a happy new year.

So go out and get it girl! The world has been waiting for you to show up and show out. Give 2023 everything you’re made of. And then some.
