Things to do When Therapy isn't an Option

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! I am truly an advocate for a healthy mental state, as well as seeking therapy as needed. I understand that therapy may be unavailable to some due to location, finances, etc. Here are just a few ways to focus on your mental health when therapy isn’t an option!

Journal

A journal can be one of the best friends that you never knew you needed! It’s always there to bear your innermost thoughts, deepest secrets, and wildest dreams. You never have to worry about your business hitting the streets. I’ve been journaling for years and I find it to be a great reflection tool. It’s amazing to see the level of growth that has taken place between the time it was written and present day. My favorite places to find the best (and affordable) journals are TJ Maxx, Ross, and Beall’s Outlet. If you need help with writing, check out a prompted journal; one of my faves can be found here.

Turn to your personal library

Books are literally my life! I believe that there is a book to help with any situation. While some books are made for entertainment purposes, I believe others are created to assist in the healing process, and can be a great alternative to a face to face conversation with a therapist. A few of my favorite books that have helped me throughout the course of my healing journey are:

Switch on Your Brain - Dr. Caroline Leaf

Uninvited- Lysa TerKeurst

Boundaries- Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend

Let Love Have the Last Word- Common

Follow therapists on social media

Have an Instagram account? If the answer is yes, you have access to free counseling advice! While this advice is limited, it is a free alternative that could aid in the process of growth and getting to the next stage in life. I follow a few therapists and I pretty much share their words of wisdom on a daily basis on my personal Instagram account. I am grateful that they utilize their platform to share their gift with the world. Check out Nedra Tawwab ( @nedratawwab), Dr. Caroline Leaf ( @drcarolineleaf), Black Female Therapists (@blackfemaletherapists), Silvy Khoucasian (@silvykhousian), and Sharon Peykar (@sitwithsharon) on Instagram for starters!

Find a trusted friend

Having a tribe you can trust can make all of the difference in the world. These individuals provide a solid foundation that can’t be shaken. Sometimes you just need to talk things through, and in some cases (especially when vulnerability is involved), it is best to find someone that is able to provide a safe place and a listening ear. When I’m down about something or frustrated, there is no question about who I will call first. With that one phone call, I know that whatever is said will stay there without any judgment or shame. Even if your tribe consist of just one, don’t hesitate to lean on that shoulder when necessary!
